U.S. Army researches photovoltaic fabrics for various power generation equipment

The U.S. Army has partnered with solar technology experts at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to explore innovative ways to integrate photovoltaic (PV) materials into fabrics. This collaboration aims to develop power-generating textiles that can be used in military tents, uniforms, backpacks, and other essential gear. The goal is to provide soldiers with a portable and sustainable source of electricity for their communication devices, surveillance systems, and other critical equipment. In February, the U.S. Army Contract Command (ACC) at Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) signed a $1.8 million contract with the University of Massachusetts to support the Photovoltaic Fabrics project. The initiative focuses on creating renewable energy solutions using solar-powered fabrics that can be easily integrated into military applications. These fabrics are designed to capture sunlight and convert it into usable electrical energy, offering a practical alternative to traditional power sources in the field. The Department of Materials and Textiles at the University of Massachusetts is leading the research into photovoltaic textiles and nanomaterials. Their work involves developing advanced materials capable of capturing both light and thermal energy from the sun. By incorporating nano-materials, researchers are working on enhancing the functionality of these fabrics at the molecular level, enabling them to serve as both photovoltaic cells and even fuel cells. One of the key applications of this technology is the creation of solar-powered tents. These tents could significantly reduce the need for external power sources during missions. Additionally, the University of Massachusetts has partnered with Konark Technologies, a company specializing in flexible solar cell development, to help manufacture the photovoltaic fabrics for the U.S. Army. The fabric will be used in military uniforms and backpacks, allowing soldiers to generate power on the go. Due to the experimental nature of the project, the contract between the Army and the university was structured as a cost-reimbursement agreement rather than a fixed-price contract. This arrangement allows for greater flexibility as the project evolves and new challenges arise. This initiative represents a significant step forward in integrating renewable energy solutions into military operations, making it more efficient and environmentally friendly.
