The U.S. Army has partnered with solar technology experts at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to explore the development of photovoltaic fabrics. These innovative materials aim to generate electricity and be integrated into essential military gear such as tents, uniforms, and backpacks. The goal is to provide soldiers with a reliable power source for their communication devices, surveillance systems, and other critical equipment while on the move.
The Army’s Contract Command (ACC) at Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) and the University of Massachusetts signed a $1.8 million contract to support the Photovoltaic Fabrics project. This initiative focuses on creating renewable energy solutions that can be embedded in various military applications. By harnessing solar power through textiles, the project seeks to enhance operational efficiency and reduce dependence on traditional fuel sources.
The Department of Materials and Textiles at the University of Massachusetts is leading research into photovoltaic textiles and nanomaterials. Their work involves capturing both light and thermal energy from the sun, using advanced nano-technologies to develop next-generation photovoltaic cells and even fuel cells. These materials are designed to function at a molecular level, offering greater efficiency and flexibility.
One of the key applications of this fabric is in the creation of solar-powered tents that can convert sunlight directly into usable electricity. The university has also partnered with Konark Technologies, a company specializing in flexible solar cells, to help produce the photovoltaic fabrics for the military. This collaboration aims to bring the technology from the lab to real-world use, including in uniforms and backpacks.
Due to the experimental nature of the project, the contract between the Army and the University of Massachusetts was structured as a cost-reimbursement agreement rather than a fixed-price contract. This allows for more flexibility as the technology is developed and tested. The project highlights the growing importance of integrating sustainable energy solutions into military operations, ensuring that soldiers have access to power wherever they go.
