Measures to reduce or break the sow before and after weaning

It is essential to take preventive measures against mastitis in sows after weaning. However, some farmers mistakenly reduce the amount of concentrate, green feed, and water three days before weaning, or even only provide water on the day of weaning. These improper feeding practices often result in delayed estrus in sows. In reality, whether or not to reduce feed before or after weaning has no direct connection with the occurrence of mastitis. The structure of a sow's udder is unique—there is no milk reservoir, meaning milk cannot be stored for long periods. Therefore, mastitis is not typically caused by excessive milk accumulation. Milk production in sows occurs continuously, and the buildup of milk in the mammary glands increases internal pressure, which naturally signals the body to slow down milk production. There is no need to artificially reduce feed or interrupt feeding to control milk volume. Weaning itself is not the main cause of mastitis. Instead, one of the primary issues is excessive weight loss during lactation. This problem is especially common in first-time sows, as their bodies are still developing and must meet the nutritional demands of both fetal growth and milk production. Sows that are in poor physical condition often experience delayed estrus, making it crucial to maintain proper nutrition throughout the lactation period. Three days before weaning, feed should not be reduced, and water should not be cut off on the day of weaning. It’s recommended that breeders provide a special feed for non-pregnant sows that is rich in vitamin E, vitamin C, carotene, choline, and methionine. At a minimum, lactating sows should continue receiving adequate nutrition until they show signs of estrus, rather than switching to a diet meant for pregnant sows. By ensuring proper feeding and management, farmers can support the health of their sows, improve reproductive performance, and ultimately enhance overall productivity. A well-balanced diet and careful attention to the sow's condition are key to successful breeding and healthy piglet development.
