Steamer describes the process of silk degumming wastewater treatment

Silk degumming wastewater is a highly concentrated organic effluent that exhibits good biodegradability. The typical concentration levels of this type of wastewater usually include a Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 mg/L, a 5-day Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5) between 2,500 and 5,000 mg/L, and a pH level of 9.0 to 9.5. This kind of wastewater is generally produced in small volumes but often requires significant amounts of water for rinsing, resulting in lower concentration streams with COD values ranging from 500 to 1,000 mg/L and BOD5 levels between 300 and 600 mg/L. To manage the treatment process efficiently, it is common to separate high-concentration and low-concentration wastewaters before processing or to mix all the wastewater together and treat it as a whole. The overall treatment process is illustrated in the following figure.

**Typical Process for Silk Degumming Wastewater Treatment**

The treatment system typically includes two screening stages to remove large impurities. The anaerobic tank is designed in the Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) configuration, with a retention time of 6 to 12 hours. Under normal temperature conditions, the anaerobic digestion process can achieve a COD removal rate of 80% to 85%. Next, the wastewater flows into an equalization tank, where the retention time is approximately 6 to 8 hours. This helps stabilize the flow and composition of the influent before further treatment. Following this, the wastewater enters a biological contact oxidation tank, which has a retention time of 4 to 6 hours. The air-to-water ratio in this stage is typically maintained at 18:1 to 20:1. This two-stage system is commonly used, and it achieves a COD removal efficiency of around 60%. After that, the wastewater is treated in an activated sludge system, where the sludge retention time is 8 to 10 hours. This stage can remove approximately 60% to 65% of the remaining COD. Finally, the treated water is directed to a secondary sedimentation tank, where the settling time ranges from 1.5 to 2 hours. These tanks are usually of the vertical flow type, ensuring effective solid-liquid separation.
