An air-type electromagnetic contactor, also known as a magnetic contactor, is composed of several key parts, including the contact system, an electromagnetic operating mechanism, a mounting bracket, auxiliary contacts, and an outer casing or frame. These components work together to ensure safe and efficient operation.
One characteristic of AC electromagnetic contactors is the loud "squeaky" noise produced when the coil is energized. This sound is a result of the magnetic field created by the AC power supply and is a common feature of these types of contactors.
Since the 1980s, researchers around the world have focused on developing quieter and more energy-efficient AC contactors. A common approach involved using a transformer to reduce the AC voltage and then converting it to DC through an internal rectifier. However, this method introduced additional complexity and was not widely adopted due to its limitations.
Vacuum contactors use a vacuum interrupter chamber to extinguish the arc that forms when the contacts open. This design makes them ideal for high-voltage and high-current applications where reliability and longevity are crucial.
On the other hand, semiconductor contactors operate by switching the conduction state of a circuit using solid-state components. They offer faster response times and lower maintenance compared to traditional electromechanical contactors, making them suitable for modern electronics and automation systems.
Another innovation is the permanent magnet contactor, which uses permanent magnets instead of electromagnets to control the movement of the contacts. Based on the principle of magnetic pole repulsion and attraction, this design reduces power consumption and improves efficiency, making it a promising alternative in certain applications.
