Recently, Ma Weibin, a researcher from the Guangzhou Institute of Energy Research under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, introduced an innovative solar-powered adsorption desalination system equipped with a heat recovery cycle. This system addresses issues related to energy consumption and equipment material corrosion in both heat-treated seawater desalination and membrane-based seawater desalination processes.
Solar desorption seawater desalination is a cutting-edge technology that leverages solar energy as a heat source for purifying seawater. Silica gel, known for its excellent water vapor adsorption properties, plays a crucial role in this system. Adsorption beds made using this characteristic absorb water vapor evaporated in a low-pressure evaporator. Subsequently, a cooling tower and solar collectors drive the desorption process, which ultimately leads to the production of fresh water in a condenser at a relatively low cost.
This device boasts several advantages. It has minimal requirements for the quality of raw water and operates efficiently even with low-temperature heat sources. Additionally, it enhances the overall energy efficiency and adsorption cycle capacity of the system while boosting freshwater output. Furthermore, it minimizes seawater corrosion of equipment, making it particularly suitable for application on islands with limited access to electricity in the future.
