New technology: Wine is expected to mature in space after three years

LVMH’s renowned whisky producer, Ardbeg, is sending newly brewed spirits aboard the International Space Station, orbiting at an altitude of 250 miles above Earth, for a two-year experiment. The purpose? To explore how the flavor compound known as "terpene," specifically associated with pine, might behave differently in microgravity. This marks a significant step in understanding how environmental factors like weightlessness could influence the aging process and taste profile of spirits. Ardbeg's bold move follows in the footsteps of other beverage giants eyeing the cosmos. For instance, back in 2006, Japan’s Sapporo Brewery experimented with barley grown in space, though no wine companies have yet ventured into this arena. The cost remains a significant barrier, with estimates reaching half a million dollars for such experiments. Despite this, Ardbeg remains optimistic about potential breakthroughs. The whisky is currently stored in small plastic containers aboard the ISS, accompanied by fragments of charred oak barrel wood from the distillery. Jeffrey Manber, CEO of NanoRacks, the company managing the commercial activities of the ISS, emphasized the complexity of studying terpenes. These compounds, found in everything from paint thinners to spices, play a crucial role in defining the aroma and flavor of spirits. Mambo, Ardbeg’s representative, expressed hope that microgravity might unlock unique flavors in whisky, potentially setting them apart in the competitive spirits market. While there’s always a chance the experiment may yield inconclusive results, he believes the insights gained will be invaluable. Similarly, wine experts are eager to observe how microgravity impacts the aging process of wines, a field that could revolutionize viticulture. As the whisky ages in space, Ardbeg anticipates releasing preliminary findings in 2013. Whether or not they discover groundbreaking results, this endeavor highlights humanity’s growing interest in exploring outer space beyond traditional scientific boundaries. After all, who knows what secrets the cosmos holds for our favorite drinks?
