Able to produce organic photovoltaic panels

ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe and Solliance have announced their collaboration on a joint R&D project aimed at advancing organic photovoltaic (OPV) products. Solliance, a leading R&D company in thin-film photovoltaic technology based in the ELAT region, is teaming up with ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe, a prominent manufacturer of coated flat steel products. Together, they aim to explore the integration of organic photovoltaic functionalities into flat steel products, particularly for construction applications. The partnership highlights the growing emphasis on energy-efficient building practices within the construction industry. By integrating clean energy generation technologies into building exteriors, the concept of energy neutrality and self-sufficiency becomes more attainable. Building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) offer significant advantages by allowing solar systems to be seamlessly incorporated into structures while maintaining architectural integrity. The goal is to enable steel strips used in photovoltaic panels to acquire OPV capabilities during the production process. Applying organic photovoltaic technology to flat steel products opens the door to innovative, aesthetically pleasing, and consumer-friendly products. This could significantly boost the adoption of photovoltaic solutions in the market. Combined organic photovoltaic products can be deployed on rooftops and façades, expanding the building's energy-generating capacity and contributing to cleaner power production. Organic photovoltaic technology holds the potential to add value to the production of coil-coated steel bars. Bettina Werner Bosch from ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe expressed enthusiasm about the joint research initiative at Solliance, noting its role in bringing together diverse partners to expedite the development of standardized, integrated photovoltaic solutions. Ronn Andriessen, the organic photovoltaic project manager at Solliance, shared his excitement over welcoming ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe to Solliance's "Environmental Protection System." He emphasized the importance of collaborating with a renowned steel manufacturer, which underscores the market's growing interest in organic photovoltaic solutions. This partnership marks a crucial step toward achieving high-efficiency, low-cost, reliable, and widely applicable organic photovoltaic modules—a key priority on Solliance's research roadmap. As the global demand for sustainable energy solutions continues to rise, this collaboration exemplifies how innovation in materials science and renewable energy can converge to create transformative opportunities in the construction and energy sectors.
