LVMH's whisky brand, Ardbeg, is sending freshly brewed whiskies to the International Space Station, located 250 miles above Earth, for a two-year experiment. This unprecedented venture aims to explore how the flavor molecule "terpene," often found in spices, paint thinners, and spirits, behaves in a weightless environment. Jeffrey Manber, CEO of NanoRacks, the company managing the ISS's commercial operations, remarked, "The terpene structure is incredibly intricate. Understanding its evolution in microgravity could yield fascinating insights."
Ardbeg's experimental batch is stored in small plastic containers aboard the ISS, accompanied by fragments of charred oak barrels used in their distillery. These samples will help determine if whisky develops unique flavors or aromas when aged without gravity. While the potential benefits are exciting, Mambo, a key figure at Ardbeg, acknowledges the risks. "We might discover something extraordinary, but there’s also a chance we’ll find nothing at all." He remains optimistic about the long-term implications, believing that studying space-aged wine could offer invaluable data.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time alcohol has ventured into space. Back in 2006, Japan’s Sapporo Brewery experimented with space-grown barley, showcasing the growing interest in extraterrestrial beverage production. However, the high costs associated with such endeavors—estimated at around $500,000—are likely prohibitive for smaller producers. Despite these challenges, the potential scientific breakthroughs make this endeavor worthwhile.
As the whisky ages, Ardbeg plans to release an initial report in 2013. Mambo speculates that after five years, they may uncover some groundbreaking discoveries. Meanwhile, other winemakers are taking note. For wine institutions, observing how microgravity influences the aging process takes years of meticulous research, yet the results could revolutionize both science and the culinary world.
