Morphological characteristics of Lagerstroemia speciosa

Morphological characteristics of Lagerstroemia speciosa:

Lagerstroemia speciosa, commonly known as the Queen's Flower or Banaba, is a large deciduous tree that can grow up to 7–25 meters in height. It has a smooth, gray bark and cylindrical, hairless branches. The leaves are alternate or subopposite, with a stout petiole measuring 8–10 mm. The leaf blades are leathery, elliptic or ovate-elliptic, sometimes lanceolate, ranging from 10 to 30 cm in length and 4 to 12 cm in width. Both surfaces of the leaves are glabrous, and they have 7–17 pairs of lateral veins that connect directly at the leaf margin.

The flowers are striking, coming in shades of red or purple, with a diameter of about 5 cm. They appear in terminal panicles that form a tower-like shape, reaching 15–25 cm in length. Each flower has a short peduncle (1–1.5 cm) covered in dense yellow-brown felt. The calyx features 12 longitudinal grooves, with scorpion-like hairs up to 13 mm long. The lobes are triangular and recurved, while the inner surface is hairless, except for some scales. There are six petals, nearly round or obovate, measuring 2.5–3.5 cm in length, with short claws of about 5 mm. The stamens number between 100–200, inserted in the middle and lower parts of the floral tube. The ovary is globose, with 4–6 locules, glabrous, and 2–3 cm long, longer than the stamens.

The fruit is an obovate or globular capsule, 2–3 cm in length and about 2 cm in diameter, containing numerous seeds that measure 10–15 mm. The flowering period occurs from May to July, and the fruiting season takes place from October to November.

This tree is known for its large, opposite leaves that can reach up to 70 cm in length, with short petioles. The leaves are elliptic, long ovate, or oblong, typically around 20 cm long, with an acute apex and entire margins. It blooms between May and August, producing large, showy flowers in terminal panicles. The flowers are purple in color, with a diameter of about 5–7 cm, and feature six lavender-colored petals with wavy edges. The capsules are spherical, about 2.5 cm in diameter, and turn brown when mature in autumn. They split into six parts when ripe. The calyx is ribbed and covered in scale-like hairs, and the tree is most commonly in bloom during the summer and autumn months.
