According to recent reports, a groundbreaking 3D-textured solar cell is set to undergo testing aboard the International Space Station (ISS) in the coming year. The ISS orbits Earth approximately every 90 minutes, experiencing about 16 sunrises daily, which makes it an ideal environment for testing solar technology under extreme conditions.
The initiative was proposed by Professor Jude Redi from Qiao Yai University of Technology. His research aims to evaluate how these 3D-textured solar cells perform in the harsh conditions of space. The experiment has already been approved by the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS), and the new solar panels are expected to be launched next year.
Made from carbon nanotubes, the innovative solar cells feature a light-absorbing layer on their surface. This design allows them to capture sunlight more efficiently than traditional flat panels. The project represents a major step forward in solar energy technology, with potential applications not only in space but also on Earth.
Redi explained that scientists have developed an ultra-efficient solar cell capable of being connected via a USB port. This kind of technology could revolutionize power distribution in both space and terrestrial environments. For years, the ISS has served as a vital laboratory for researchers, students, and scientists, enabling experiments that push the boundaries of science and engineering.
One of the first experiments conducted outside the ISS involves installing solar panels, which will be mounted on the Nanoracks external platform. The ISS completes one orbit around Earth every 90 minutes, allowing the solar panels to receive sunlight from multiple angles and directions. This unique setup enables Redi’s team to quickly assess the performance of the 3D solar cell configuration.
The test will involve a solar cell coated with a copper zinc-tin sulfide (CZTS) film. Unlike traditional flat panels, this 3D structure allows sunlight to penetrate deeper into the cell rather than reflecting off its surface. This advancement could significantly improve energy conversion efficiency, making the technology more viable for future space missions and renewable energy systems on Earth.
