When it comes to the carbon content, hot-rolled steel sheets typically contain slightly more carbon compared to cold-rolled ones. Hot-rolled steel sheets are known for their lower hardness, making them easier to process while retaining excellent ductility. On the other hand, cold-rolled steel sheets boast higher hardness, making them more resistant to deformation and offering greater strength. However, this also means they're a bit trickier to work with during manufacturing. Hot-rolled steel sheets tend to have lower strength, poorer surface quality (more oxidation and less smoothness), yet they excel in terms of plasticity. They’re often used for medium to heavy plates, whereas cold-rolled sheets, with their high strength, hardness, and superior surface finish, are usually thinner and ideal for stamping applications.

The production processes differ significantly too. Hot-rolled steel sheets undergo rolling at high temperatures, while cold-rolled ones are processed at room temperature. Generally speaking, cold-rolled steel sheets exhibit better strength, whereas hot-rolled sheets are more ductile. Cold-rolling typically results in thinner sheets, while hot-rolling can handle larger thicknesses. The cold-rolled steel sheets stand out with better surface quality, a smoother appearance, and improved dimensional accuracy. Their thickness can be rolled down to around 0.18 mm, which is why they’re highly favored in many industries.
