November 24 Design Transformation: Spa Bath Retreat – The Unveiling
Â
Today marks a significant milestone as we’re finally ready to unveil the incredible spa bath renovation project that we’ve been diligently working on for several months. It required a lot of planning, collaboration, and hard work from everyone involved, but the final outcome has made every bit of effort worthwhile! Let’s revisit what we began with and the obstacles we encountered along the way.
Our client had spent considerable time searching before purchasing her home. While the property offered many desirable features, the master bath was a major concern—certainly not what she had imagined. She desired a serene spa-like retreat complete with a spacious shower and soaking tub, ample storage, and excellent lighting. Most importantly, she wished for a tranquil sanctuary where she could unwind after a long day at work.
What she initially received—and what we inherited—was a large but poorly utilized space that felt dark and lackluster. The awkward shower arrangement, absence of a bathtub, and impractical cabinetry were among the primary issues we faced during our initial assessment. Although we often retain existing elements in bath renovations when possible, this particular project called for a complete overhaul. However, we did manage to salvage a few details: the crown molding was exquisite, and the sliding French doors provided breathtaking views of the surrounding forest. Additionally, the room's original layout—already featuring a separate water closet and clothes closet—didn’t require any major adjustments.
Thus, our mission was clear: transform this underwhelming space into a restorative oasis that harmonized with the natural beauty of its woodland setting while delivering all the luxurious amenities our client craved.
Our first priority was drafting a fresh floor plan. Despite the room’s size, much of the space was wasted, and storage solutions were insufficient. Our revised layout maintains the position of the water closet while introducing a generous soaking tub where the outdated shower once stood. This allows for leisurely soaks while gazing out at the sky and treetops beyond. The redesigned shower includes a bench for relaxation, along with a ledge extending toward the tub—a perfect spot to place your phone, glass of wine, skincare products, and other essentials for a true spa experience.
Next, we tackled the vanity area. Our updated design enhances both functionality and aesthetics by incorporating abundant storage and providing seating for easy makeup application. There’s also room for a cozy dressing chair. In the master closet, we crafted a layout featuring an island for extra storage, numerous hanging spaces, drawers, and shelves for clothing and footwear, ensuring plenty of room for future additions.
When it came to materials and finishes, we focused on soothing hues and textures reminiscent of the home’s natural woodland environment. A theme inspired by skies and water guided our selections, aiming to infuse the space with gentle serenity. We chose organic materials that felt refined yet understated, aligning perfectly with our client’s vision of a quiet retreat for morning and evening rituals.
And now, the moment you’ve been waiting for—the reveal! What once appeared dull and uninspiring is now a breathtaking master bath retreat fit for a five-star resort. A more functional layout, exquisite materials, and copious storage options make this bathroom one that our client never wants to leave. The highlight of the entire room is the wall of green marble arranged in a wave pattern, echoing the nearby mountains yet evoking the ocean’s waves. Running the tile across the full length of the room creates not only a striking shower feature but also a stunning backdrop for the therapeutic air tub we installed.
The shower boasts both a fixed showerhead and a handheld option, complemented by body jets designed to relieve daily stress. A natural quartz ledge that doubles as a bench in the shower flows seamlessly into a curved extension serving the air tub. Suspended above, a bubbling chandelier provides ambient lighting while adding a playful touch, reinforcing the water-and-sky motifs. The porcelain tiles mimic the color of sandy beaches, invoking memories of coastal walks or riverside strolls.
Opposite the master bath lies the vanity, finished in an elegant limed oak that’s both beautiful and understated, offering a tactile contrast to the room’s smooth surfaces. The same natural quartz used in the shower reappears here as a sleek countertop. Polished nickel fixtures, including sconces with paper shades and cabinet hardware, add subtle sparkle to the serene ambiance. Mirrors in a simulated bone tone contribute texture and an organic aesthetic. Our fabric choices for window treatments and the armchair reflect the fluidity and colors of nature, enhancing the spa-like atmosphere with warmth and softness.
Lastly, the master closet underwent a dramatic transformation from a utilitarian space with wire shelving and rods into something far more sophisticated and inviting. Bold lighting, an island, mirrored doors, and ample hanging and drawer space ensure this closet isn’t just practical—it’s also a stylish complement to the newly renovated bath.
In the end, our client couldn’t be happier with the results. She expresses joy in spending time in her new bath, indulging in both the tub and shower. What began as a lackluster, poorly designed space has evolved into a calming, nature-inspired spa retreat offering exactly the elegance and functionality she dreamed of.
