Xiaoli Potted Culture Method:
Xiaoli, also known as small-flowered chrysanthemums, is best suited for dwarf varieties when grown in pots. The ideal potting mix consists of 5 parts garden soil, 3 parts fine sand or slag, and 2 parts well-decomposed organic fertilizer. To ensure proper drainage, the bottom of the pot should be covered with crushed tiles. Seedlings are typically planted in 10 cm pots, and a diluted cake fertilizer is applied after planting. Once the plant reaches about 20 cm in height, it should be repotted twice before removing the buds. Each time, fresh humus soil is added to fill the pot, promoting healthy growth.
Light is essential for Xiaoli’s development. It requires at least 6 to 10 hours of sunlight daily. If kept in low-light conditions for too long, the plant may grow weakly, produce fewer flowers, and become more prone to diseases.
Temperature plays a crucial role in its growth. Xiaoli thrives in cooler environments, making it more suitable for northern China. It blooms from summer through autumn, while in the Yangtze River region, it tends to enter a semi-dormant state during the hot summer months. In such cases, shading the plant with leaves and misting it regularly can help keep it cool and healthy.
Watering should be done evenly—neither too much nor too little. Xiaoli is a water-loving plant, but overwatering can lead to root rot, while under-watering can cause leaf burn and wilting. During summer, watering should be more frequent, while in spring and autumn, it should be reduced. Avoid water accumulation during rainy days, and raise the pots if necessary. Watering should be minimized or stopped completely before the harvest season.
Fertilization is important for optimal growth. In addition to the base fertilizer, a diluted 10% cake fertilizer should be applied every 10 to 15 days during the growing season. After the buds appear, a 1-3% solution of potassium dihydrogen phosphate can be used to enhance flower color and vibrancy.
Pruning is essential for shaping the plant and encouraging blooming. When cultivating a single small flower, remove lateral buds and leave only the main branches. For potted plants, control the height by removing all axillary buds from the base and picking flowers from long buds. When growing four small flowers, once the seedling reaches 10-15 cm, leave two knots at the base to form four side branches, and allow one top bud on each side branch. This setup allows for four flowers to bloom. If you want the plant to flower around National Day, prune it after the first bloom in early July. Cut back the branches to about 20 cm, wait for them to wilt, then reduce watering slightly. With proper care over the next two months, the plant will be ready to bloom by National Day.
