Recently, the R&D team at the Surface Science and Nanotechnology Center of the Technical University of Bucharest has made a significant breakthrough by developing Romania's first third-generation solar cell based on carbon nanotubes. This innovative project was supported by funding from the European Union. The team utilized their in-house research and development equipment to achieve this milestone, marking an important step forward in renewable energy technology within the country.
Carbon nanotubes are incredibly small—40,000 times thinner than a human hair. They exhibit exceptional electrical conductivity, being 1,000 times more conductive than copper. In terms of hardness, they match that of diamonds, yet their mechanical strength is 14 times greater than Kevlar, making them one of the strongest materials known to science. These unique properties make carbon nanotubes ideal for advanced applications in electronics, energy, and material science.
The research team has achieved remarkable results, with some of their technologies reaching national standards and others advancing to international levels. One of their key innovations is SPFM (Scanning Polarization Force Microscopy), which allows precise control over the angle and spacing of nano-droplets, enabling detailed analysis of corrosion effects at micro and nano scales. By employing pulsed laser ablation techniques, the team has successfully created various carbon nanostructures, including graphene, concentric multi-sphere structures, and single-walled carbon nanotubes.
In addition to their scientific achievements, the team is actively pursuing patents for their work on third-generation solar cells. Their efforts include designing specialized growth chambers for carbon nanostructures and utilizing excimer laser ablation technology to enhance production efficiency and performance. These advancements not only highlight the technical excellence of the team but also position Romania as a growing player in the field of nanotechnology and sustainable energy solutions.
