Prevention and emergency treatment of lye burns

Alumina Company uses alkali method to produce alumina. The process medium has the characteristics of high alkali concentration and high temperature. In the wet work position, when the equipment and process are defective, when the “running and leaking” occurs, the process medium will be possible. Direct contact with the human body, if the labor insurance is not fully worn, the damage caused to the human body is greater.

The lye is highly corrosive. Once it touches the naked part of the body, it will cause burns, especially splashing into the eyes, which is more harmful.

The first chapter analyzes the causes of lye burns

(1) Most of the causes of lye burn accidents are entering the job site, and labor insurance supplies are not fully worn, such as

1.1. Safety glasses are not worn during on-site inspection, and the alkali machine is sealed or the material is pierced into the eyes.

1.2. When cleaning the trench, the labor insurance is not properly worn. No rain pants, rain boots or trousers are placed on the rain boots. The lye is poured into the shoes to burn the feet.

1.3. When the sample is discharged, the protective glasses are not worn. The alkali liquid splashes into the eyes or comes into contact with the face and neck. Without rubber gloves, the lye splash will burn the hands.

1.4. When disassembling the pipe or tank manhole bolt, the labor protection product is not worn, or the staff member is facing the flange, and there is residual material inside to splash and injure people.

(2) When performing maintenance or cleaning operations, the safety measures are not strictly implemented, causing accidental contact between personnel and lye, such as:

2.1. When repairing pump equipment or pipelines, the lye is not released or the import and export valves are not tight enough to start the permit work.

2.2. When cleaning all kinds of tanks, the materials are not put out or the feed pipes are not completely cut off (add blind plate or disassemble imported short elbows).

(3) The safety hazards on site are not eliminated in time, such as:

3.1. There is an alkali droplet leakage in the pipeline on the pipeline, and there are personnel passing under it.

3.2. There is no warning and protection in the danger zone, and non-work related personnel are mistaken.

3.3. The trench cover is not secure, notched or missing, and the staff can easily step into the trench.

(4) Other aspects

4.1. There is a chance to take out the labor protection articles without leaving the danger zone.

4.2. On-site lighting or insufficient light causes the staff to enter the dangerous area with alkali.

4.3. There are problems with the quality of labor insurance products, such as raincoats and rain boots.

4.4. The production control is unreasonable. The liquid level of the tank containing alkali material is too high, causing the trough, and a large amount of alkali liquid leaks.

Chapter II Emergency treatment after septic burns

(1) Persons who are burned by lye should first “self-help”. If the injury is light, they should be evacuated from the danger zone at the fastest speed. If the injury is serious, it is difficult to evacuate by the first time, through mobile phones, walkie-talkies and other communication methods. Or shouting and other means to seek help.

(2) To assist rescuers to enter the site, first of all, ensure that personal labor insurance products are fully worn, and pay attention to observe the scene environment, determine the appropriate rescue route, and prevent injury.

(3) Emergency disposal methods:

3.1 Immediately flush the burned surface with plenty of water for a period of not less than 30 minutes. Do not apply any ointment or red syrup on the fresh wound. Do not blister the blisters to prevent infection.

3.2 If the eye is burnt, do not rub your eyes. Rinse immediately with running water, or use other people's assistance to wash with a bottle. When washing, the eyelids must be opened for at least 30 minutes. If there is no flushing equipment on site, you can bury your head in the clean water basin, open the eyelids and turn the eyeball to wash.

3.3 If the burned area is large, the injured person's clothes should be taken off immediately. If the clothes are tight, use scissors to cut the clothes carefully.

(4) At the same time as the above processing, the team members should also inform the leader at the first time, and contact the vehicle according to the injury and send the injured person to a professional hospital for examination or treatment.
