Red jade, also known as "crimson jade," gets its distinctive color from the secondary oxidation and iron mineral infiltration that occurs near the weathered surface or along the fractures of jadeite. This type of jade is primarily found in the old fields of Myanmar and the "Damakan" region, where geological conditions have allowed for this unique coloring process.
There are three main types of red jade:
- Bright Red: Often referred to as "Chicken Red," this is considered the highest quality among red jade varieties due to its vibrant and rich hue.
- Dark Red: This type is more commonly found near the edges of the original stone, with a deeper and more intense coloration.
- Brown-Red: Typically found on the outer layers of the stone, this color results from prolonged weathering and leaching processes over time.
The red color in jade can also be achieved through heat treatment. By heating jadeite samples that originally appear grayish-yellow or brownish-yellow, the material undergoes a transformation that produces a striking red tone. This process is often used to enhance or create the appearance of red jade.
When distinguishing between natural red jade and artificially treated "twilight jade," there are several key characteristics to look for. Natural red jade tends to have better transparency and hydration compared to its artificial counterparts. Additionally, natural red jade exhibits a parallel arrangement of color particles, often referred to as "color roots." This feature is commonly seen in red jade pieces and contributes to their unique visual texture.
Naturally occurring bright red jade with high clarity and a smooth, glass-like finish is rare and highly valuable. These pieces are often sought after by collectors and can command extremely high prices in the market.
In contrast, "twilight red jade," sometimes called "burnt red jade," lacks the same level of clarity and structure. Its "color roots" tend to be disorganized, radial, or non-directional, resulting in a dry and less appealing appearance. Due to its lower quality and lack of aesthetic appeal, it holds little to no collection value.
