At first glance, the topic may seem broad, but breaking it down reveals several key functions. UHV grids enable large-scale, long-distance, high-capacity, and efficient transmission of energy resources. They significantly increase power transmission capacity, extend the economic transmission distance, and enhance the safety and stability of large power systems. There are four major practical implications: First, China's western regions are rich in energy resources, while the eastern regions have high electricity demand. UHV technology allows for the efficient transfer of energy from resource-rich areas to load centers, making it a rational way to achieve optimal energy distribution. Second, the third-generation power grid, with UHV as its backbone, was designed with the integration of renewable energy in mind, promoting the development of clean energy. Third, the advancement of UHV technology drives the upgrading of domestic equipment manufacturing, supporting industrial innovation. Fourth, UHV opens up new channels for cross-continental energy transmission—like transporting solar power from the Sahara Desert to Europe, where it can be utilized effectively instead of being wasted.
Since January 2009, State Grid Corporation has launched several landmark UHV projects, including the 1000 kV AC pilot project in Shanxi-Jingmen, the ±800 kV DC Xiangjiaba-Shanghai line, and the 800 kV DC Jinping-Sunan line in Sichuan. These projects, featuring the highest voltage, largest capacity, and most advanced technology, have safely transmitted over 80 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity. This demonstrates the safety, economic efficiency, and environmental benefits of UHV. The success of UHV has enabled the concept of "replacing coal with electricity, replacing local generation with long-distance power, and importing electricity from afar," marking a new stage in national power grid development, led by UHV, driven by intelligence, and supported by comprehensive innovation.
During the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period, UHV became an inevitable choice for power grid construction, driven by growing energy demand, the need for long-distance power transmission, and government support for high-end equipment manufacturing with independent technology. Promoting optimal energy allocation, accelerating clean energy development, driving industrial upgrades, and building intercontinental energy corridors all highlight the critical role of UHV in shaping the future of global energy systems.
