Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) subsidiary TSMC Solar announced on the 31st that its advanced facility in Taichung has successfully developed a CIGS module measuring 1.09 square meters with a conversion efficiency of 15.1%. This achievement was made using existing manufacturing equipment and materials, and the efficiency has been verified by UL (Underwriters Laboratories) and TUV SUD. The result marks a new global record for one-piece thin-film large-area modules.
According to Zhao Yingcheng, general manager of TSMC Solar, the company has made significant progress in process development within just over a year. The module’s conversion efficiency now matches that of current mainstream silicon-based technology, highlighting TSMC’s high technical standards and strong innovation capabilities. The competitive edge of TSMC's CIGS technology lies in its ability to improve energy conversion efficiency, as well as its superior high-temperature performance and cost-effective structure.
Stephen McKenery, CEO of global sales at TSMC Solar, noted that customer feedback has been very positive regarding the continuous improvements in module performance. In high-temperature environments, TSMC’s CIGS series products still deliver up to 5% more power output compared to standard commercial modules, which has greatly impressed clients.
