Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), through its subsidiary TSMC Solar, announced on the 31st that its advanced facility in Taichung has successfully developed a CIGS (Copper Indium Gallium Selenide) solar module with an area of 1.09 square meters and a record-breaking conversion efficiency of 15.1%. This achievement was made using existing manufacturing equipment and materials, marking a significant milestone in thin-film solar technology. The efficiency has been verified and certified by UL (Underwriters Laboratories) and TUV SUD, confirming it as the highest recorded efficiency for a single-piece large-area film module globally.
According to Zhao Yingcheng, general manager of TSMC Solar, the progress in process development over just one year has been remarkable. The company's CIGS modules have now reached efficiency levels comparable to mainstream silicon-based technologies, showcasing TSMC’s strong technological standards and innovation capabilities. TSMC’s competitive edge in CIGS technology lies in its ability to enhance conversion efficiency, along with superior high-temperature performance and a cost-effective structure.
Stephen McKenery, CEO of global sales at TSMC Solar, noted that customer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. He highlighted that TSMC’s CIGS series products continue to outperform standard commercial modules by up to 5% in power output under high-temperature conditions, which is a key advantage in real-world applications. This performance improvement not only strengthens TSMC’s position in the renewable energy market but also demonstrates its commitment to delivering reliable and efficient solar solutions.
With this breakthrough, TSMC is further solidifying its role as a leader in both semiconductor manufacturing and emerging solar technologies, showing how cross-industry expertise can drive innovation and sustainability.
