The Spiderman in the City

In the heart of Zhengzhou, high above the bustling streets, a group of workers known as "spiders" scale skyscrapers with precision and courage. These high-rise cleaners, like Ren Yonggang, work at heights of up to 45 meters, often in extreme weather conditions, ensuring that the city’s glass facades shine bright. For over a decade, Ren has been part of this unique profession, cleaning a quarter of the high-rises in the Zhengdong New District. “I work outside the glass, just for my son,” he says with a quiet determination. “I hope one day he can work inside it.” On a cold December day, Ren and his partner prepared for their daily climb on the International Trade Building in Zhengzhou 360 Square. They secured a thick rope around a fence post and fastened it to their waist, then carefully maneuvered along the building using a safety harness. With a brush in hand, they moved like spider-men across the glass, their movements smooth and practiced. Ren, now 36, started this job in 2003 after finishing junior high school. At first, the height terrified him. “The first time I climbed, I felt dizzy, my legs shook, and I was sweating. Looking down, everything looked tiny—like ants and matchboxes.” But over the years, he grew more confident. Now, he finds peace in the view of the city from above. His gear is simple but essential: hard hats, waterproof clothes, rubber boots, safety belts, suction cups, brushes, and water-jet tools. Cleaning a building can vary depending on its condition. A clean surface requires a soft cloth and glass cleaner, while a dirtier one needs a high-pressure hose. Over the past ten years, Ren has cleaned some of the most iconic buildings in Zhengdong, including the China Building, Zhongkuo Food Building, and the Agricultural Bank of China. He has not only contributed to the city's beauty but also supported his family, helping them build a better life. Safety is always top of mind. “We take every precaution,” he says. “The ropes are our lifeline. They can hold up to 7 tons, so we never take them lightly.” Each task follows strict procedures, from securing the ropes to checking equipment regularly. According to Shi Zhiguo, secretary-general of the Henan Cleaning Industry Association, high-altitude workers must undergo rigorous training and medical exams. People with fear of heights, hypertension, or heart issues are not allowed to work at such levels. Additionally, weather conditions play a big role—cleaning stops when wind exceeds level 4 or visibility is poor. Despite the risks, Ren has never had an accident. “Those who fall usually lack proper training or ignore safety checks,” he explains. His goal is simple: return home safely every day. As the year ends, the cleaning industry enters its busiest season. Ren and his team are fully booked, working long hours to meet demand. In winter, the cold is harsh, and in summer, the heat is unbearable. Yet, he continues, driven by his family and the pride of contributing to the city. His hands are rough, his arms scarred, but he sees these marks as proof of his dedication. “It’s part of the job,” he says. “We all have our scars.” Although challenges exist—like delayed payments or difficult-to-clean structures—Ren still loves what he does. “This job gave me a better life. When I see a clean building, I feel proud. I know I helped make Zhengzhou look beautiful.” For Ren, the future is about his son. “I’m working outside the glass now so he can work inside one day.” Every climb, every brush stroke, is a step toward that dream.
