The Spiderman in the City

In a city where skyscrapers reach for the sky, a group of workers known as "spiders" navigate the vertical world with skill and precision. Like the iconic superhero, they scale the sides of buildings, cleaning windows and exteriors at heights of up to 45 meters. Ren Yonggang is one of these high-rise cleaners, working for over a decade in Zhengzhou’s Zhengdong New District. Over the years, he has cleaned a quarter of the district’s high-rises, dedicating his life to providing for his family. "I work outside the glass, just for my son," he says, smiling through the cold wind that whistles at the top of the International Trade Building. His job isn’t easy — it requires strength, focus, and a strong sense of responsibility. Every day, he ties himself to a thick rope, climbs along the building, and uses brushes, sponges, and water jets to keep the city’s skyline shining. Ren started this dangerous job in 2003 after finishing junior high school, driven by the need to support his family. The first time he climbed high, he felt dizzy and scared, watching the world below like tiny ants. But over ten years, he grew more confident. Now, he finds beauty in the view from above, even when the work is tough. The equipment he uses is simple but essential: hard hats, waterproof clothes, safety belts, and ropes that can hold up to 7 tons. Each task follows strict procedures to ensure safety. For example, corners are wrapped with soft materials to prevent wear on the ropes. Regular inspections and maintenance are crucial — a single mistake could be fatal. Safety is not just about equipment; it's also about training. Workers must pass medical exams and have proper certifications. People with fear of heights, heart conditions, or high blood pressure are not allowed to work at such altitudes. Weather conditions also play a role — if the wind is too strong, or if it's snowing or foggy, work stops. Despite the risks, Ren has never had an accident. He believes that proper training and attention to detail are key. "If someone falls, it's because they didn't follow the rules," he says. For him, the job is more than just a livelihood — it's a way to contribute to the city he calls home. At the end of the year, the cleaning industry is busy, especially with large projects like the China International Trade Building. Ren and his team spend days cleaning millions of square meters of glass and walls. Winter is particularly challenging — the cold is biting, and long hours in the air make it hard to eat. But he smiles through the hardship, knowing that his efforts help make Zhengzhou shine. His hands are rough, his skin is weathered, and his body bears the marks of years spent climbing. Yet, he takes pride in his work. "When I see a clean building, I feel proud," he says. "It's my contribution to the city." Ren dreams of a better future for his son, who is now studying in junior high. "I work outside the glass so that my child can work inside." That dream keeps him going, even on the coldest days.
