Looking back at the year of the machine tool industry in 2013

**Abstract** Core Tip: Recently, the China Machine Tool & Tool Industry Association held the "Joint Meeting of Representatives of Overseas Enterprises and Machine Tool Associations in China" in Beijing. Attendees included Chen Huiren, Executive Vice President and Secretary General of the China Machine Tool Industry Association, Executive Vice President Wang Liming, Mao Yufeng, and other key leaders from the association. Over 60 participants from 34 overseas companies and associations across 12 countries and regions, along with several department heads and staff from the Machine Tool Association, joined the event. A photo was shared during the meeting, showcasing the gathering of industry leaders and representatives. Mao Yufeng provided an overview of the association’s recent changes and the roles of its key leaders. Wang Liming then spoke on behalf of the association, discussing the economic performance of the Chinese machine tool industry in 2013, market demand, and preparations for the upcoming 8th China CNC Machine Tool Exhibition (CCMT2014). He emphasized that while the global economy is improving, the situation remains complex, making international cooperation essential for mutual growth. Mao Yufeng also explained the newly issued "Implementation Rules for the Management of Members of Foreign-invested Enterprises," which aims to better regulate and integrate foreign enterprises into the association. This move reflects the association's efforts to build a more modern and service-oriented organization. The rules were widely supported by attendees, who agreed that foreign companies would enjoy the same rights and responsibilities as domestic members. During the discussions, delegates expressed enthusiasm for information sharing despite time constraints. Li Xingbin from the American Machinery Manufacturing Technology Association (AMT) highlighted the U.S. economic outlook for 2014, predicting a 3% growth. He noted that U.S. firms in China are more affected by low-end products but are seeing a trend of returning production due to rising costs. Ma Yanxi from GF Processing Group (formerly Achi Xiamir Group) mentioned that their 2013 results were similar to 2012, with better sales in milling machines than EDM equipment. They plan to shift some high-end production to China but face challenges with part supply quality and delivery times. Hanno from DMG/Mori Seiki Asia shared that Mori Seiki saw a 40% growth in 2013, with plans to expand manufacturing in Shanghai and enhance product alignment with local needs. Ren Jiaping from Julang Company reported a 15–25% increase in both China and Germany, attributing success to turnkey projects in the automotive sector. Jing Xirui from Beijing Fanaco Electromechanical Co., Ltd. noted a 10% growth, emphasizing closer alignment with customer and market needs. He suggested that machine tool companies should pay attention to the IT market, as it could offer new opportunities for small and medium-sized machines in 2014. GROB’s Ren Hongzhi expressed confidence in the company’s future in China, citing its strong position in automobile engine production lines. Sun Yimin from MAG said the company will focus on the automotive industry over the next few years. Shan Yaodong from Mazak (Shanghai) noted significant growth after the CIMT2013 exhibition and praised the company’s remote service initiatives. Mitsubishi Electric reported strong performance in 2013, with 10% growth in inverter business and 30% in CNC. Wang Linshuben predicted a similar trend for 2014. Wu Zufeng from THK (China) said the company achieved a 10% growth in 2013 and aims for double-digit growth in 2014. While many machine tool companies showed positive growth, others like Seco Tools, Siemens, HEIDENHAIN, Fagor, and Isa remained cautious, reporting little or no growth. However, all companies analyzed market conditions and discussed strategies for the future, offering valuable insights to peers. From the speeches of 24 representatives, it was clear that foreign companies in China are performing well, driven by advanced technology, quality products, and good service. Many have expanded their presence in China, viewing it as a key market with strong potential. Some newcomers are also optimistic about the future. In his closing remarks, Chen Huiren summarized the 2013 development of China’s machine tool industry as “down, change, and transformation.” He discussed market dynamics with specific data, noting that enterprises are increasingly proactive in adapting to changing conditions. While 2014 may not bring major changes, the focus will be on “stable progress, reform, and innovation.” Chen also highlighted the association’s ongoing strategic reforms, institutional adjustments, and recruitment efforts, aiming to strengthen market awareness, service orientation, and member engagement. The association seeks to fulfill its role as a modern social organization, providing better support and services to industry enterprises.
