"Super Tent" covers hundreds of millions of yuan in contaminated soil restoration projects

A few days ago, a massive white inflatable structure spanning 20,000 square meters and standing 36 meters tall appeared in the urban area of Hangzhou, drawing widespread public attention. The site was once the Hangzhou Pesticide Factory, which has been abandoned since its relocation in 2009. Due to historical contamination, the soil on the plot emitted a strong, pungent odor, prompting the construction team to erect this "super tent" as a temporary solution to contain the smell during the remediation process. On the afternoon of the 13th, reporters visited the site on Xinfeng Road and found the perimeter surrounded by construction barriers. A sharp, unpleasant odor was noticeable, and many passersby quickly moved away. A construction worker explained that the former pesticide factory had left the soil heavily contaminated, and the large tent was built to "disinfect" the land while minimizing the spread of odors. The Hangzhou Pesticide Factory, once a key industrial site, had been vacant for years. In 2012, the Hangzhou Industrial Assets Investment and Management Group began planning soil remediation, but the project was halted due to complaints from nearby residents about the strong smells. When the environmental company Dadi Environmental took over the project, they faced similar issues—during excavation, the odor spread, leading to numerous complaints and a temporary shutdown of work. To address these concerns, the construction team spent tens of millions of yuan to build the inflatable tent during this year’s May Day holiday. The structure was designed to trap the odors and reduce their release into the environment. They also used aerial deodorizing sprays and other methods to further minimize the impact. However, the tent itself posed new challenges. The high concentration of gases inside required workers to wear gas masks for protection. According to tests conducted by the Hangzhou Municipal Solid Waste Management Center, the main odor-causing components were toluene, xylene, and methylene chloride, though their concentrations were relatively low. The site is located near several residential areas and is surrounded by ongoing real estate developments. Some sales promotions have been temporarily suspended, reflecting growing public concern. The soil remediation project has already cost over 100 million yuan and has been underway for more than a year, yet no clear timeline for completion has been provided by the construction team. This project highlights the complex challenges of dealing with industrial pollution and the need for innovative solutions to protect both the environment and local communities. As the work continues, the focus remains on balancing effective cleanup with minimal disruption to residents.
