NSK Bearing Pre-Tightening Methods and Effect Analysis

Pre-tightening is an essential technique used in NSK bearings to ensure optimal performance under various operating conditions. Depending on the application, bearings may require either a positive or negative working clearance. In most cases, a small amount of positive clearance is necessary to allow smooth operation. However, in some applications, preloading—where a negative clearance is applied—is used to enhance rigidity, improve rotational accuracy, or reduce vibration. For example, in machine tool spindles, automotive transmission pinion bearings, small motor bearings, and other reciprocating systems, preloading is often required. When a bearing operates at high speeds with minimal load, applying a preload through springs or other mechanisms can help prevent rolling elements from skidding, which could otherwise lead to premature wear or damage. The method of pre-tightening varies depending on the type of bearing. Radial bearings such as cylindrical roller bearings are typically preloaded radially, while thrust ball bearings and cylindrical roller thrust bearings are preloaded axially. Single-row angular contact ball bearings and tapered roller bearings are generally preloaded in the axial direction and are often used in pairs, either back-to-back or face-to-face, to achieve better stability. Deep groove ball bearings can also be preloaded axially, but the pre-load must be greater than the standard radial internal clearance to ensure proper contact between the balls and raceways, especially when the contact angle is greater than zero. The benefits of pre-tightening include increased rigidity, reduced noise, and improved precision. It also helps compensate for wear over time, ensuring consistent performance throughout the bearing's lifespan.
