Japan Developed FED Technology Lighting Device [Full Text]

On January 9, 2013, the Environmental Research Section of the Graduate School of Tohoku University in Japan and Dowa Holdings announced that they have jointly developed cold cathode field electron emission surface emitting devices that use carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The FED (fiel demission display) technology, which was previously developed primarily for display applications, was diverted to lighting applications. Tohoku University and Tohwa will exhibit the research results of the device at the lighting exhibition "LIGHTING JAPAN 2013" (16-18 January 2013, Tokyo Ariake International Convention and Exhibition Center).

The FED technology is a technique that emits electrons from a cathode in a vacuum environment so that the electrons strike the fluorescent material to emit light. Its principle is similar to Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) technology. In the early 2000s, research and development aimed at implementing ultra-thin displays using FED technology were quite active. On the Other hand, with respect to displays using carbon nanotubes as the cathode, although the Japanese New Energy Industry Technology Development Agency (NEDO) is also promoting related development, it has been unable to introduce related products due to the popularity of LCD panels.

This time, Northeastern University and Tonghe Holdings achieved breakthroughs in the process development of using carbon nanotubes to form cold cathodes. According to reports, the basic technology for manufacturing long-life, low-power, high-brightness lighting devices has been developed.
