The average price of 5,500 kcal thermal coal in the Bohai Rim region closed at RMB 545 per ton this week, marking an increase of RMB 8 per ton compared to the previous reporting period. This upward trend reflects ongoing demand and supply dynamics in the region.
In this report, the latest trading prices for major thermal coal varieties across key ports in the Bohai Rim are as follows:
For 5,500 kcal/kg thermal coal, the transaction prices varied by port. Qinhuangdao Port reported a range of RMB 540–550/ton, while Caofeidian Port saw prices between RMB 535–545/ton. SDIC Jingtang Port and Jingtang Port both recorded RMB 550–560/ton, Tianjin Port at 545–555/ton, and Huanghua Port at 530–540/ton. Notably, Qinhuangdao, SDIC Jingtang, Tianjin, and Huanghua ports all experienced a price increase of RMB 5–15/ton compared to the last report. The other two ports maintained stable pricing.
For 5,000 kcal/kg thermal coal, the ranges were slightly lower. Qinhuangdao Port had prices between RMB 495–505/ton, Caofeidian Port at 485–495/ton, SDIC Jingtang Port at 480–490/ton, Jingtang Port at 485–495/ton, Tianjin Port at 480–490/ton, and Huanghua Port at 495–505/ton. Prices rose significantly in several locations, with Qinhuangdao up by RMB 20/ton, Caofeidian, SDIC Jingtang, and Tianjin up by RMB 15/ton, and Jingtang and Huanghua up by RMB 10/ton.
According to the data collected from the six major ports, out of 24 port specifications, 19 showed price increases—matching the previous period’s count—while five remained unchanged. No specifications recorded a price decrease.
The performance of the Bohai Rim Steam Coal Price Index during this reporting period highlights three key trends:
(1) Two-thirds of the ports saw rising prices, with the upward movement intensifying, signaling sustained pressure on thermal coal prices in the region.
(2) Prices for low-calorific thermal coal (5,000 and 4,500 kcal/kg) continued to rise sharply, further influencing the pricing of higher calorific coal.
(3) The comprehensive average price of 5,500 kcal/kg thermal coal increased by RMB 8/ton this week, marking the fourth consecutive week of growth.
Experts attribute the current price surge to several factors. First, the Chinese economy is showing signs of recovery, with GDP growth reaching 7.7% in the third quarter, higher than the first half of the year. This suggests improved economic activity and increased energy demand. Second, hydropower output has declined, leading to greater reliance on thermal power for winter storage. Additionally, manufacturing activity remains robust, with PMI indices from the China Mining Federation and HSBC both indicating expansion.
