What are the technical requirements for welding gloves?

Welding gloves are essential protective gear designed specifically for welders to safeguard their hands from the hazards associated with welding. These gloves are made from fire-resistant and heat-insulating materials, which help protect against high temperatures, molten metal, and flying sparks during the welding process. Typically, welding gloves are crafted from high-quality leather such as pigskin, cowhide, or sheepskin, and they come in either fingered or two-finger styles. The cuffs of these gloves are usually longer than 18 cm, often made from canvas or leather for added durability and protection.

According to the LD34.3-92 standard, the quality of welding gloves must meet specific requirements to ensure safety and performance. First, the gloves should be constructed from wear-resistant and heat-resistant materials, such as leather or a combination of cotton canvas and leather. Their length should be at least 300 mm, and it is crucial that welders never use damaged or wet gloves, as this can compromise their effectiveness and safety.

If the welding environment involves conductive surfaces, the gloves must be made from insulating materials or include an additional insulating layer. These gloves must also pass a 5000V withstand voltage test before being used to ensure electrical safety. This is especially important when working in areas where there's a risk of electric shock.

The material used for welding gloves must meet strict criteria. For instance, the leather should be of high quality—first-grade leather should have a uniform thickness, softness, and elasticity, with a fine, firm surface and consistent color. Second-grade leather may have slight imperfections, such as uneven texture or color variation. The thickness of the leather and canvas must also meet specified standards, ensuring both comfort and protection. Additionally, the mechanical properties of the gloves should be suitable for use, with the palm and back of the hand being soft, strong, and evenly thick. The sleeve material should have a slight elasticity for better flexibility and fit.

During the manufacturing process, several key requirements must be followed. The seams on the palm and back of the glove should be clipped, using chrome leather or pigskin for reinforcement. The reinforced areas should be made from the same type of leather as the main parts of the glove, with a width of at least 15 mm. The stitching density should be appropriate: 3–4 stitches per cm for the main seams and 4–5 stitches per cm for the dark lines. The sewing should result in a well-shaped hand, with straight and even stitches and moderate elasticity. Any broken needles, skipped stitches, or uneven stitching must be corrected by resewing the affected area to maintain quality and safety.
