In a typical cable transmission system, many manufacturers' so-called mixers are actually just distributors labeled as mixers, with the same internal structure as a standard distributor. A true mixer is required when combining multiple signal sources in a cable TV system, typically handling more than 16 channels. However, there are no 2-to-8 channel mixers available on the market, and even the most basic models can cost thousands of dollars due to their high performance and complexity.
This distinction is important because in a standard one-way cable system, distributors are often used in reverse to achieve the desired signal distribution. Distributors allow bidirectional signal transmission, but they have a fixed attenuation between the input (IN) port and output (OUT) ports. There is no fixed attenuation between two output ports, and the isolation between them is usually at least 25 dB, which helps reduce interference between adjacent channels.
Therefore, when using a distributor as a makeshift mixer, it's common to reverse its connections: connect the OUT ports to the signal sources and use the IN port as the combined output. For example, if transmitters 1 and 2 are connected to the two OUT ports, the IN port can then be connected to the downstream cable, delivering the mixed signals directly to the receiver.
Understanding this setup helps optimize signal distribution while maintaining signal integrity and minimizing interference. This approach is commonly used in practical installations where dedicated mixers may not be economically feasible.
