Successful development of carbon fiber thermoplastic composite materials

HC Plastics News:

On November 28th, Shanghai Huahang Carbon Fiber Composites Co., Ltd. announced that it has developed a continuous carbon fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone composite (CF/PEEK composite). The strength of this composite is 5 times higher than that of metal, 60% lighter than metal, and its performance is 10% higher than similar products.

Shanghai Huahang Carbon Fiber Composite Materials Co., Ltd. was founded by nine graduate students from East China University of Science and Technology, including Shanmu, Hongcheng and Jiakaihui. The team focused on the development of high-performance carbon fiber thermoplastic composites, and its CF/PEEK composite products developed a number of performance indicators better than similar foreign products.

The composite material is resistant to high temperature and corrosion, has strong impact resistance, high plasticity, and is also self-lubricating, wear-resistant, X-ray transparent, and radiation-resistant. Materials with these characteristics are used in aircraft manufacturing to replace some metal materials, which can reduce the quality of the fuselage, reduce fuel consumption and reduce carbon emissions. The related products are recognized when they are tested by potential suppliers of large domestic aircraft. In addition, this composite material can be widely used in aerospace, energy industry, transportation, medical equipment and other fields.

Mr. Zhou Xiaodong, a member of the China Aviation Composites team, studied CF/PEEK composite materials as his research topic. Hong Cheng and Chen Yu from the same laboratory also joined the formation of the start-up team. After unremitting efforts and repeated attempts, the team overcame the problems of high processing temperature, high melt viscosity, difficulty in fully impregnating fibers, improved production process and production equipment, and successfully developed high performance CF/PEEK composite materials. Invention patent. Today, the Huahang team has three invention patents and has obtained four written letters of intent for cooperation. At the same time, the team also won the Shanghai Gold Award and the National Silver Award for the 4th “Internet” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition in China, and the Shanghai Gold Award and National Silver Award for the “Creating Youth” National College Student Entrepreneurship Competition in 2018.

According to the survey, there are only a handful of companies that can produce CF/PEEK composite materials globally due to high technical barriers. At present, the research and development of this material in China is still in the laboratory stage, and there is no industrial production capacity. However, the demand for this material in China's large aircraft, high-speed trains, automobile industry, nuclear power engineering, etc. is very urgent. Today, high-performance fibers and their composites-related industries are growing rapidly around the world, and the demand for lightweight, recyclable, and environmentally-friendly materials is growing. If the relevant materials are applied on a large scale in the manufacturing industry, the level of lightweight technology in the manufacturing industry can be improved. Therefore, since the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan”, China has attached great importance to the research and development and application of high-performance fiber composite materials, and has formulated corresponding strategic plans.
