Scientists invented night power generation system: higher efficiency and lower cost

On August 13, according to foreign media reports, a new study by Stanford University in the United States designed an off-grid, low-cost modular energy source that can efficiently generate electricity at night. According to the report, although solar energy has many benefits as a new energy source, its use in areas with insufficient sunlight will be restricted due to its dependence on sunlight. Therefore, scientists have designed a night power generation system that will not be restricted by regions.

In order to find a suitable alternative, scientists at Stanford University set their sights on radiant cooling to generate electricity. This method uses the temperature difference generated by the heat absorbed by the surrounding air and the radiation cooling effect of the cold space to generate electricity.

The researchers said that one of the most effective ways to use radiant cooling to generate electricity is to use a heat-conduction generator, which is a device that uses the thermoelectric effect (Seebeck effect) to directly convert heat (temperature difference) into electrical energy.

In the study, the researchers further optimized the radiant cooling power generation. They improved the collection of energy, allowing more heat to flow into the system from the surrounding air, and added new commercial thermoelectric materials to increase the energy utilization rate of the device.

In addition, the researchers also used computer modeling to simulate the power generation process with real physical parameters, and calculated that a heat conduction generator covering one square meter of roof can achieve the best balance point between heat loss and thermoelectric conversion to maximize Land use of night power generation equipment on the roof.

It was found that without the need for batteries or any other external energy sources, the manufactured device can generate 2.2 watts of electricity per square meter, which is 120 times the amount of electricity generated by previous computer simulations.

In the next step, researchers will study the best design of the equipment between day and night to further expand the practical application of the equipment.

An Infrared Thermometer is a thermometer which infers temperature from a portion of the thermal radiation sometimes called black-body radiation emitted by the object being measured. They are sometimes called laser thermometers as a laser is used to help aim the thermometer, or non-contact thermometers or temperature guns, to describe the device's ability to measure temperature from a distance. By knowing the amount of infrared energy emitted by the object and its emissivity, the object's temperature can often be determined within a certain range of its actual temperature. Infrared thermometers are a subset of devices known as "thermal radiation thermometers".
