"Paper paste" solar cells come out: photoelectric conversion efficiency is not high

A groundbreaking development in renewable energy has emerged from Japan, where a research team has created a new kind of solar cell using wood pulp as its main component. Dubbed "paper-paste" solar cells, these devices are lightweight, flexible, and environmentally friendly, offering a promising alternative to traditional solar panels.

According to a report on the Japanese news website "Daily News," a team led by Associate Professor Nobuya Nobuta from Osaka University's Institute of Industrial Science has developed a transparent material made from plant fibers found in wood pulp. Through a special compression process, they managed to create a substrate just 15 nanometers thick. This ultra-thin material serves as the base for organic solar cells, which are then embedded with conductive wiring to form the final product.

Although the current photoelectric conversion efficiency of these "paper-paste" solar cells stands at only 3%, which is lower than the typical 10% to 20% seen in conventional solar panels, their advantages make them highly appealing. They are extremely low-cost, easy to manufacture, and ideal for portable applications. Their flexibility and thinness also open up new possibilities for integration into everyday objects and wearable technology.

While the efficiency is still relatively low, researchers believe that further improvements could be possible through material optimization and design enhancements. This innovation marks an important step toward more sustainable and accessible solar energy solutions, especially in regions where traditional solar panels may not be practical or affordable.
