The five taboos for bonsai conservation:
First, avoid fertilization. During the hot summer months, when temperatures rise and leaves lose moisture quickly, applying fertilizer can cause the cells in your bonsai to have a lower concentration than the surrounding environment. This imbalance may lead to water moving out of the plant’s cells and into the soil, causing dehydration and eventually killing the tree.
Second, avoid drought. It's important not to overwater, but also not to neglect watering entirely. If you forget to water for a few days and notice the leaves wilting, giving it a quick drink might seem like a solution. However, this is actually the plant’s way of adapting to stress. Prolonged dryness, though, can lead to irreversible damage, as the tree struggles to recover from constant transpiration.
Third, avoid water stains. When the temperature rises above 28°C, it’s crucial to provide shade for your bonsai. Without protection, the amount of water absorbed by the roots will be much less than what is lost through transpiration, leading to burnt leaf edges and eventual death.
Fourth, avoid excessive shade. While it's wise to move your bonsai to a cooler spot when temperatures get too high, don’t place it in complete darkness or an overly cool indoor environment. Sudden changes in light and temperature can cause the leaves to drop and the tree to weaken rapidly.
Fifth, avoid watering in the afternoon. During the hottest part of the day, spraying water on your bonsai or watering the pot directly can cause a sudden drop in temperature, which may shock the tree and harm its health.
By understanding these five key points, you can better care for your bonsai during the challenging summer months. Remember, proper care isn't just about following rules—it's about observing your plant and responding to its needs with patience and care.
