Carbon dioxide synthesis of new biodegradable plastics achieve mass production

A few days ago, the team of Wang Xianhong, a researcher from the Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, "dressed" a 5000-mu farmland with carbon dioxide-based biodegradable agricultural mulch. The current farmland trials are working well. This research lasted for two decades and realized the industrial production of carbon dioxide-based biodegradable plastics, with an annual output of 50,000 tons, which can be used to prepare plastic bags and express packaging.

Carbon dioxide is the main culprit of the greenhouse effect, but it is also a low-cost carbon resource. The carbon dioxide-based biodegradable plastics synthesized from the raw materials have no pollution to the environment and the production cost is low.

Since 1997, the Changchun Yinghua Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has begun to deploy basic research on the application of carbon dioxide-based biodegradable materials. Wang Xianhong introduced: "The synthesis of carbon dioxide-based biodegradable materials is not difficult in principle. The difficulty lies in how to develop high-activity catalysts to synthesize high-molecular-weight carbon dioxide-based plastics, and through low-cost modification to achieve the optimal properties of this substance."

Through technical cooperation with multiple enterprises and after repeated trials, the team of Wang Xianhong completed the industrial process design of high molecular weight carbon dioxide-based biodegradable plastics with excellent performance in 2014. This achievement was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China's Outstanding Youth Science Foundation, and obtained 2 US patents, 1 Japanese patent, and 27 Chinese invention patents, forming a complete independent intellectual property right. At the same time, the mulch made of this material has been tested by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and other scientific research institutions for four consecutive years. It is expected to provide a new breakthrough for solving the residual pollution of farmland mulch.

"We will intensify our efforts in market promotion. If the scale of industrialization reaches 300,000 tons per year, the cost will be further reduced." Wang Xianhong said. (Maweiwei)
