JPEA reminds: Photovoltaic plants that are flooded may cause electric shock!

The Japan Photovoltaic Power Association (JPEA) released on September 11 the precautions for photovoltaic power generation equipment when it suffered a flood damage and drew the attention of relevant parties.

This was due to the heavy rain caused by the typhoon No. 18, which was released after a large-scale flood in the Kanto and Northeast regions of Japan.

First of all, when PV systems are flooded or immersed in water, there is a risk of electric shock when approaching or touching the connection between the PV Inverter (PCS) and the solar panel and the power cable, so do not approach or touch it.

When a floating object or the like causes damage to the solar panel, the power collection box, or the PCS, or the connected power supply cable is cut off and flooded or flooded, there may be electric shock when approaching. Therefore, it is recommended not to approach.

When a photovoltaic power station is damaged, a photovoltaic power generation system with an output of 50 kW or less may be contacted by a sales and construction operator. A licensed electrician of more than 50 kW may be contacted to seek solutions.

JPEA said that solar panels damaged by floods may experience poor insulation and other failures. There is danger of electric shock when touched.

In the process of restoring operations, etc., when it is necessary to contact, avoid hands-free operation and take measures against electric shock (rubber gloves, rubber boots, etc.) to reduce the risk of electric shock.

When many solar panels are blown away or washed away by water in a connected state, if they are in an energized state, they may generate electricity under sunlight and generate high voltages and currents. It is necessary to pull protective ropes around the perimeter to prevent inadvertent personnel from inadvertently entering.

In water-soaked PCS, the DC circuit may be short circuited. If the solar panel is powered on, short-circuit currents through the PCS may cause short circuits and heat.

When finding a PCS short-circuit, contact the sales construction operator for a countermeasure. When handling, in order to ensure safety, JPEA recommends disconnecting the PCS circuit breaker while taking measures against electric shock.
