Inner Mongolia Agricultural University successfully cloned the first lactose-degrading enzyme transgenic cow

On June 10th, the reporter saw at the Dairy Base of the Key Laboratory of Bio-manufacturing of Inner Mongolia Agricultural University that a two-month-old black-and-white calf was running in the herd. It is a transgenic cloned cow and is the first mammal to have a lactose degrading enzyme transgene. At the time, a total of 7 children were cloned, and 4 children were successfully produced and 2 children survived.

Why Clone Lactose Degrading Enzyme Modified Cows? Prof. Zhang Li, the host of the project, stated that the human body's lactase level gradually decreased with age. In particular, about 30% of the people in the East could not drink fresh milk or yoghurt. This is because milk contains lactose. If the human body lacks lactase or lacks lactase, lactose in the milk cannot be absorbed and utilized in the intestine, and it will produce a large amount of carbon dioxide, causing bloating, diarrhea, abdominal pain, gastrointestinal discomfort, and indigestion. The results of this study use somatic cell cloned animal technology and transgenic technology to clone cows that are rich in lactose degrading enzymes and glycosidases. Lactose decomposing enzyme can decompose lactose into galactose and glucose which can be used by anyone, and also can make galactose into galacto-oligosaccharide. This sugar has a good therapeutic effect, thus solving the problem of lactose discomfort at the source of milk. ".

Professor Zhou Huanmin, director of the Bio-manufacturing Key Laboratory of Inner Mongolia Agricultural University, said that the birth of the lactose-degrading enzyme transgenic cow marks the formation of a large-scale industry for this dairy cow's new breed, and its products have given birth to two markets. First, it can meet the needs of the “lactose intolerant” consumer groups, and milk can increase by as much as 30% in the current market share. Second, it can meet the needs of glucosidase industrial production. Glycosidase is an important additive in the food industry. The glycosidase purified from the milk produced by the transgenic cow is not only highly active, but also has strong heat resistance, and is suitable for processing and disinfecting treatment, and can also develop health functional food.
