FDK develops abrasive materials that can grind aluminum alloys in a short time

According to Nikkei BP, FDK has developed a technology for grinding aluminum alloys in a short time using magnetic abrasive materials. It is expected to be used for finishing and correcting trial molds and resin injection molding dies made of aluminum alloy.

At the end of 2007, the company began supplying grinding system samples consisting of abrasive materials and special turning tools.
This application has been extended to hard aluminum alloys.

It is easy to use and can be ground using existing machines such as NC machines. Simply apply a magnetic abrasive paste to a special turning tool with a magnet on the tip and rotate it near the workpiece to be machined. This time, the composition of the material was changed based on the resin abrasive material, and the saturation magnetic flux density was improved. There are two types of abrasive materials for roughing and finishing.

FDK grinds the super-hard aluminum A7000 material and finds that the average roughness before grinding is 4.014 μm, and finishing 20 minutes after roughing can reduce the surface average roughness to 0.184 μm. The company plans to apply it to harder materials in the future and further develop abrasive materials that can be used to modify common molds.

The sample price of the aluminum alloy grinding system is the same as that of the resin grinding system. The standard kit consisting of two special turning tools, operating software and two 120g grinding pastes (roughing and finishing) is 190,000 yen. It is also possible to sell an additional abrasive, which is priced at 250 yen/1g.
